Dear Friends: I've uploaded my transfer of Columbia M 30085, a stereo LP with performances of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and "Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage" cantata, op. 112, by the New Philharmonia Orchestra under Pierre Boulez. As far as I know, this is the only Beethoven that Boulez has ever recorded commercially. It is also one of only a few LP-era recordings that Boulez has blocked from CD reissue. Not that many listeners have been clamoring for a CD reissue of this particular LP! The original reviews were strongly negative, as I recall, and I don't think there has been a significant critical reassessment of these recordings in the 40-odd years since the LP was issued.
Listening to the LP now, I can only marvel at its uniformly negative reception. For me, this is a riveting Beethoven 5th, heartfelt, superbly played, and full of the enlightening interpretative touches and unique sonorities that make so many of Boulez's Columbia recordings special. The rarely heard choral work (sung by the John Alldis Choir) is also beautifully done.
